Music Marketing Blog Post #1

     Research and brainstorming/planning of your music marketing project. 

    First, my group and I looked at the song choices that were given. One stood out the most, at first, we chose "We Are Young", and once we started brain storming ideas, my group decided to review all our options again. When we reviewed our choices "Royals" stood out and after quickly getting inspired and brainstorming great ideas we decided to go with "Royals". "Royals" was our best option because we felt it was one of the songs we could execute the best with our materials and ideas. After choosing the song, we had to decide what we wanted in our video, we came to the conclusion that we want to be able to show symbolism and have a two-sided video that goes with the song.

    Next, was to start working on the marketing research for the companies and case studies of our genre. We decided it would be best to split the work and review because that way we get more in-depth learning about the types of strategies used. Now we had to find the companies and artists. First, we decided to go with Universal Music Production since it caught our eyes as it was being discussed in class, then we had to research and found that Columbia record was the best fit due to the artist that are represented and the synergy they use that can be compared to UMP's strategies for growth. After splitting the work I was left with the task of researching the history and background of Columbia Records and research the marketing strategy used to promote Harry Styles's new album. First I went into Clumbias history, I surfed the web and made sure to get credible evidence, and found the Clumbias page. After writing down key information about Columbia's history I had to look into Harry Styles's marketing strategy. It took a while but I hit the jackpot, with two articles and one PDF, the first article was the success story of the Columbia and Harry styles Marketing duo, the second was the big picture of the marketing strategy used and finally was the PDF. The PDF broke down all of the strategies Harry Style used and gave a walkthrough of the dates that the road trip was happening, the dates he had to post on Instagram, and more. These three sources really helped me build my summary into an elaborated outlook on the marketing strategies.

    After all the researching and reviewing the charts we had to elaborate more on the layout of our music video. We decided we wanted some key concepts such as the use of colorization and symbolism. We decided on the theme of our video and built around it. After deciding on the "jealousy" theme we wanted to make a video that compared what the main person wants v what they have. With the use of purple props to signify luxury and royalty we have what our character wants, and on the other hand with the brown beat-up props, we have what our character actually has. We started on the description of the storyboard and below you will see the progress pictures of the chart, storyboard, and the PDF that helped me make the Harry Styles marketing summary.

Representation Analysis

     Representation one, Tide: This advertisement comically presents the stereotype that girls  are delicate and like soft colors such as pink. The ad pokes fun at this stereotype, they do this by making the mom seem like how girls are "supposed to look like", and then the daughter has more of a "manly" aesthetic with cargo shorts hoodies and building a garage. The mom seems uncomfortable with the daughters choices which makes us think that the mom has more of a conservative ideals.

 

    Representation two, Axe: This ad is directed at men. The ad shows "appealing" women in bathing suites running and swimming towards a certain spot. Later in the ad a man is shown spraying "Axe"  on himself. The ad tries to sell the idea that this body spray will attract women. Women are being shown somewhat desperately running towards the male. They are appealing to the males audience in order to sell their body spray.

 

    Representation three, H&M: This advertisement asserts the stereotypes for age, ethnicity and gender. In the ad a progressive view on society is shown. The ad tries to attack each stereotype through fashion. Phrases like "dress like a girl" with images of men dressing feminine-like are shown.  They do this with ethnicity showing clothing for certain cultures on individuals or groups of people. They also stated "dress like a teen" with an older person riding a bike. The ad seems to break down all these expectations that society has. The ad is describing fashion as something that portrays freedom. Towards the end of the ad the say that the only rule is to "recycle clothes" so others can use it no matter what gender, age or ethnicity. Overall this ad sells its idea in a unique way, by breaking down preconceived notions that society has.

Genre conventions

There are different types of comedy movies

The first types are the two general formats. there is a comedian lead format and a situational comedy.

Comedy movies can be broken down even further to

"slap stick" - This is primitive and universal comedy with broad, aggressive, physical, and visual action, including harmless or painless cruelty and more.

"Deadpan"- This form of comedy was best exemplified by the expression-less face of stoic comic hero Buster Keaton.

"Verbal comedy"-This was classically typified by the cruel verbal wit of W. C. Fields, the sexual innuendo of Mae West, or the verbal absurdity of dialogues in the Marx Brothers films, or later by the self-effacing, thoughtful humor of Woody Allen's literate comedies.

"Screwball"-These films combine farce, slapstick, and the witty dialogue of more sophisticated films. In general, they are light-hearted, frothy, often sophisticated, romantic stories, commonly focusing on a battle of the sexes.

"Black or Dark Comedy"- These are dark, sarcastic, humorous, or sardonic stories that help us examine otherwise ignored darker serious, pessimistic subjects such as war, death, or illness.

"Parody"-usually a humorous or anarchic take-off that ridicules, impersonates, punctures, scoffs at, and/or imitates (mimics) the style, conventions, formulas, characters (by caricature), or motifs of a serious work, film, performer, or genre. One example of this movie is the movie "Scary Movie".

Some interesting shot techniques commonly used

1. The camera push way too far out (usually demonstrates that they aren't seeing the whole picture in a scene)

2. Camera push way to far in (makes the camera sort of in the way of things)

3. Quick zoom (Used to show funny characters expressions/actions)

4. Reveal (camera starts at one spot and moves to another revealing a joke)

5. Wait for it (allows joke to transpire over time)

Audience engagement

Comedy Films have a main goal to elicit laughter from the audience. Comedies are light-hearted dramas or action movies, crafted to amuse, entertain, and provoke enjoyment in a humorous manner. The comedy genre humorously exaggerates the situation, characteristics, action, and language. Comedies observe the uncertainties or frustrations of life this providing merriment and a momentary escape from day-to-day life. They usually have happy endings, although the humor may have a serious or pessimistic side.

These wide variations of movies make it enjoyable for an audience. Comedy movies can be matched with other genres such as action. These mix and matches are great and develop a good base for comedies. Comedies can lift ones mood and make them feel better which is great as a social factor and can even help someone mental state at a certain time. If you want to get cheered up or just be in a better mood comedy movies might be a solution.

Jumanji The Next level 

This film portrays the comedy genre very well. This is an action/comedy film which features Kevin Hart as one of the main characters. Kevin Hart is an American stand-up comedian, actor, and producer. This film demonstrates a situational based comedy, which happens to use The camera push way too far out, camera push way too far in, quick zoom, reveal and Wait for it shots. This film elicits laughter from the audience through the humorously exaggerated situations, characteristics, or actions. The movies characters are unique and have funny moments throughout the movie making it enjoyable and taking some suspense out if the movie.

Grownups

Grown Ups” is a pleasant, genial, good-hearted, sometimes icky comedy The setup for the story: Five kids were on a basketball team in middle school. Their beloved old coach has died. To mourn him they return to the lakeside cabin where they celebrated their victory all those years ago. The five where played by Adam Sandler, Rob Schneider, Kevin James, Chris Rock and David Spade. Sandler's wife is a famous designer (Salma Hayek). Schneider's much older wife is Joyce Van Patten. Rock's pregnant wife is Maya Rudolph. His Madea-style mother is Ebony Jo-Ann. James' wife is Maria Bello, who is still breast-feeding their 4-year-old at every opportunity. Spade is unmarried, which given the size of the cast is just as well, since the characters have five children (I think), and there are also roles for Steve Buscemi as a guy who ends up in a body cast, Di Quon as Sandler's Asian nanny, and of course Schneider's three daughters from two previous marriages, two of them towering models, the third short and stout. There are so many characters in the movie that some scenes look like everyone lined up for a group shot. These combos make the movie great and cause great chemistry which makes sense hilarious.
